Black people are a kaleidoscope of cultures. A collective non-monolith of stories that run deep, tethered to many places, and many distinct peoples within the African diaspora. This pop up exhibit is a visual essay that discusses Black histories, starting from the early 1900s in this prairie town. The catalyst of focus is the Sleeping Car Porters and their groundbreaking union. The porters and their families sustained places like Pilgrim Baptist Church, Haynes Chicken Shack, and Black businesses within The Craig Block on 795 Main Street. Through these places Winnipeg became an active connector towards national change in hiring practices, equity and immigration policies.  Train Track Tributaries celebrates our wins, resilience and ongoing conversations within the Black communities of Winnipeg and beyond.
